Literate Terms of Use
Last updated: October 14, 2026.
These terms are the rules for using the Literate app on iOS, Android, or the web (the "App"). By creating an account, you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you do not agree, do not create an account.
Who we are
Literate is a book-tracking app. You keep a record of what you read, and you can share it with people you choose through follows, posts, invite-only clubs, and loans.
Literate is made by Literate Software LLC (literate.app).
Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to use the App. The App is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. If you are under 18, you may use the App only if a parent or guardian agrees to these terms.
Your account
You sign in with the email address and password on your account. Keep your password to yourself. You are responsible for activity on your account. If you think someone else is using it, email support@literate.app.
Your content
You own the content you submit, including your profile, photos, posts, notes, and reading logs. We do not take ownership of it.
You grant Literate a non-exclusive license to host, store, and display that content only to operate the service. For example, we show it to you and, when you have made it visible, to the people and clubs you have chosen. The license is not a right to use your content for anything else.
The license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for what our privacy policy and account deletion page already describe. If you borrowed a book, the lender keeps your name on that loan record. Copies of your data may remain in our encrypted backups for up to 30 days after permanent deletion, and then expire automatically. Crash reports, which don't include your books or posts, are kept for up to 90 days. We don't restore deleted accounts from backups.
Acceptable use
Logging a book is fine, including a book with mature themes.
No harassment, sexual content involving minors, threats, spam, or illegal content. Zero tolerance.
Do not impersonate someone else.
Do not scrape the service.
Reporting and blocking
In-app reporting and blocking are not available yet. Until they ship, report content or a user by emailing support@literate.app. We aim to review reports within 48 hours.
We may remove content or suspend or terminate accounts at our discretion, without notice for serious violations.
Questions or appeals: support@literate.app.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account in the App or by email. The steps are on Delete your account.
Deleting signs you out on all devices right away. Your public data, like your profile, public books, and posts, stays visible until your account is permanently deleted after 30 days. You have 30 days to change your mind. Signing back in won't restore your account. To restore it, email support@literate.app from the address on your account. After 30 days, the deletion is permanent and can't be undone.
Subscriptions
The App has no paid features today. We may offer paid features later. If we do, Apple or Google bills you, and you manage or cancel the subscription in your App Store or Google Play settings. Deleting your Literate account does not by itself cancel a subscription billed by Apple or Google.
Book information from other services
Titles, authors, descriptions, and cover images may come from Open Library and Google Books. That information belongs to those sources and the rights holders. It can be incomplete or wrong. Literate does not own it and does not control those services.
Disclaimers and liability
The App is provided as is. We do not guarantee that it will always be available or free of errors. A loan is between you and the other person. We are not a party to it, and we do not guarantee that a borrowed book will be returned.
To the extent the law allows, Literate is not liable for indirect or consequential damages, or for lost data. Our total liability for a claim relating to the App is limited to the amount you paid us for the App in the 12 months before the claim. If you have not paid us, that limit is zero. Some places do not allow these limits. In those places, they apply only as far as the law allows.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. We will post the new terms on this page and update the "Last updated" date when these terms change. We will notify you of any significant changes by posting a prominent notice on our website or by sending you an email. If you keep using the App after a change, you accept the new terms. If you do not agree, stop using the App and delete your account.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Georgia, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes arising out of these terms are brought in the state or federal courts located in or serving Coweta County, Georgia, except where the law does not allow that. For federal cases, that is the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Newnan Division.
